Procedure of Brickwork in Masonry Construction

‘Standard specification and work procedure for brickwork in masonry construction‘ provides guidelines about quality of bricks, mortar, soaking of bricks, laying of bricks, curing, scaffolding etc. The construction of brickwork in substructure and superstructure involves quality control on various aspects of material and construction procedure.

Procedure of Brickwork in Masonry Construction

Ø  Materials for Brickwork

Bricks

It should be as per standard specification, the quality of bricks should meet the standard requirement. It should be free from carks, lumps etc. and has to be in proper shape, regular and their edges should be sharp enough. Bricks should not absorb water more than one-sixth of their weight after one-hour soaking by immersing in water.

Mortar

Material used for mortar should be as per standard specification and mortar should be of the specified grade. For cement mortar cement has to be as per standard specification and sand should be sharp, clean and free from other impurities.  Cement and sand should first be dry-mixed to have a uniform colour on a clean masonry platform and then mixed by adding clean water slowly and gradually to have workable consistency and mixed thoroughly by turning at least three times. Only freshly mixed mortar preferable to use for construction, old and stale mortar should not be used.

Ø  Soaking of Bricks

Before use of bricks it should be soaked for 12 hours in a tank and it is fully soaked in clean water. It should be done till air bubble stop to appear.

Ø  Laying of Bricks

The bricks should be laid out at both ends of the structure, with a string line stretched between them to act as a guide when laying the first courses of bricks. Remove the dry blocks from the footing and spread a layer of mortar about 10mm thick along the footing to the length of about 5 bricks. Place the corner/end brick in place squarely up against the string line. Tap this brick down with the trowel handle bedding it into the mortar.

Ø  Curing of Brickwork

After laying of bricks, It has to be kept wet for atleast 20 days and it can be done by tops of walls should be flooded with water by making small weak mortar which ends contain 1 inch deep water.

Ø  Protection for Brickwork

It should be protected from sun, rain and frost etc. during the construction as it is green and get easily damaged.

Ø  Scaffolding for Brickwork

In the construction of brick wall necessary and suitable scaffolding should be provided. This scaffolding should be strong and sound enough to handle all kinds of load.

Ø  Measurement of Brickwork

Brickwork should be measured in cubic meter or cubic feet. Different kinds of brickwork with different mortar should be taken under separate items. The thickness of the wall should be taken as the multiple of half brick as 10cm, one brick as 20cm, 1.5 bricks as 30 cm and so on. The rate should include the cost of complete work including scaffolding and all tools and plants.
